Methi Matar Muthiya nu Shaak is one such dish that is sure to warm your heart and fill your stomach with wholesome goodness. This delightful Gujarati recipe combines the earthy flavors of fresh fenugreek leaves (methi), green peas (matar), and delicious muthiya (steamed dumplings) in a fragrant, spiced gravy. It’s the perfect choice for family dinners or when entertaining guests, bringing everyone together with its rich and hearty flavors.

The ingredients in Methi Matar Muthiya nu Shaak not only deliver a burst of flavors but also offer significant health benefits. Fenugreek (methi) leaves are known for their numerous health advantages, including boosting digestion, controlling blood sugar levels, and promoting healthy skin. Green peas (matar) are a rich source of fiber, protein, and vitamins, supporting heart health and boosting immunity. The muthiya, made with besan (gram flour) and a blend of spices, is a nutritious treat, packed with plant-based protein, which helps in muscle building and weight management. The addition of jaggery, along with its natural sweetness, helps in detoxifying the body and promoting healthy digestion.

Step-by-Step Process to Make Methi Matar Muthiya nu Shaak

  1. Preparing the Fragrant Masala –
    Begin by coarsely chopping a small bunch of garlic, ginger, green chilies, and fresh coriander in a chopper. This aromatic mix forms the base of the muthiya and adds a lovely fragrance to the dish.
  2. Making the Muthiya (Dumplings) –
    In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of besan (gram flour) with ½ tsp ajwain (carom seeds), 2 tsp of the freshly prepared masala, ½ bowl of chopped coriander, 1 bowl of chopped methi (fenugreek leaves), ½ tsp haldi (turmeric), 1 tsp Kashmiri mirchi powder (for color), 1.5 tsp coriander powder, ½ tsp garam masala, salt to taste, and 2 tsp jaggery powder. Drizzle in 2 tsp of oil and mix well. Gradually add water, kneading it into a dough with a consistency similar to paratha dough. Divide the dough into small portions and roll them into balls to make the muthiya.
  3. Preparing the Sabzi (Gravy) –
    In a kadhai (wok), heat 2 tbsp of oil. Add 1 tsp cumin seeds (jeera), ½ tsp hing (asafoetida), and the garlic-coriander-ginger masala. Sauté this mixture until it becomes fragrant, releasing the flavors. Now, add 1.5 cups of fresh green peas, ½ tsp turmeric powder, and salt to taste. Pour in 2 cups of water and bring it to a rolling boil.
  4. Cooking the Muthiya –
    Once the water reaches a boil, gently drop the muthiya balls into the pot. Let them cook uncovered on high heat for about 7-8 minutes, or until they float to the surface. This ensures that the muthiya is perfectly cooked and fluffy inside.
  5. Finishing Touches –
    For the final tadka (tempering), heat 2 tsp oil in a small pan. Add Kashmiri red chili powder for a burst of color and sprinkle it along with a pinch of garam masala or coriander powder over the cooked sabzi. Drizzle this flavorful tadka over the muthiya and squeeze fresh lime juice to brighten the dish.
