Hitting the Reset Button: Our Soulful Mother-Daughter Getaway to Koh Samui
Every few months, life demands a pause. Not just a temporary break from our schedules, but a true mental reset to protect our peace, recharge our spirits, and reconnect with the people who matter most. Recently, Kangna and I realized it was time to step away from the daily hustle and hit that much-needed reset button. Our destination? The gorgeous, tranquil island of Koh Samui. If you are looking for a sign to pack your bags, take a deep breath, and prioritize your well-being, this is it. Here is a glimpse into our healing, food-filled island days to help you plan your own perfect escape.
1. Getting There & Getting Around: A Total BreezeThe journey toward relaxation shouldn’t be stressful, and traveling to Koh Samui is incredibly smooth. From Bangkok, it is just a short flight of a little over 1 hour. The moment you land, the vacation state of mind officially begins. Samui International Airport is easily one of the most beautiful, open-air, and unique airports in the world. With its thatched roofs, lush tropical plants, and breezy layout, it feels less like a transit hub and more like a welcoming island resort.Once you are out on the roads, the island treats you to beautiful, scenic drives. Navigating the town is incredibly convenient, and you will find plenty of 7-Eleven stores at every turn, making it super easy to hop out and grab quick snacks or refreshing drinks on the go.
2. Staying in Paradise: InterContinental Koh Samui ResortWe chose to stay at the InterContinental Koh Samui Resort, and it proved to be the ultimate sanctuary for our reset. Nestled on a quiet cliffside overlooking the ocean, the property is breathtaking. The Villa Life: We stayed in a private villa that offered total serenity and magnificent views. The aesthetics were so stunning that we couldn’t resist picking up the camera—we created so many incredible reels for Instagram right from our balcony and the beautiful corners of the property! Private Beach Walks:One of our absolute favorite rituals was taking long, uninterrupted walks along the resort’s quiet private beach, watching the waves crash and letting the ocean air wash away all our exhaustion.Beachfront Dining Customized for Us:For dinner, we went to Flames, the resort’s gorgeous beachfront restaurant where tables are set right on the sand under the stars. While their menu typically features high-end Mediterranean dishes and charcoal grills, the chefs went out of their way to fully customize the dishes into a spectacular, specialized vegetarian version for us. Sitting by the bonfire with a soulful meal was pure magic.
3. Unmissable Island Tours: From Sanctuaries to Island HoppingWhile it is tempting to never leave the resort, Koh Samui has an incredible energy to explore. If you want a grounding, slow-paced experience, make sure to look into the island’s conscious side, such as visiting an ethical elephant sanctuary or orphanage. Spending quiet time around these majestic, rescued animals acts as a beautiful reminder of the kind of slow, compassionate living we often forget in the city. However, if you want the ultimate island experience, hiring a private speedboat tour is something you absolutely cannot miss. You can charter a boat to go out and see the breathtaking archipelago of the islands. We went out to explore the stunning clusters of islets around the main waters. Yes, it does require a bigger budget, but if you have the means for it, do not skip it! Racing across the deep blue water, snorkeling in hidden spots, and seeing the massive limestone cliffs rising from the sea with Kangna was an unforgettable highlight of our trip.
4. Mindful Eating at Vikasa Life Café: You all know that nourishing the body with wholesome food is a massive part of how I recharge. We visited Vikasa Life Café, an organic, wellness-focused spot with panoramic cliffside views of the ocean that will take your breath away.Their menu is an absolute dream for plant-based food lovers. They focus on clean, nutrient-dense ingredients completely free of refined sugars or artificial additives. We tried their famous, vibrant vegan food bowls—including their signature Rainbow Salad and the incredibly filling Protein Buddha Bowl packed with wholesome grains and clean plant proteins. If you visit, don’t miss out on their creative starters like the delicate Vikasa Dumplings or their guilt-free desserts like the Raw Tiramisu. It is the kind of food that makes your body feel light, energized, and deeply nourished.
5. A Hidden Gem: Penne Vegan RestaurantWhile luxury dining is wonderful, some of the best travel memories come from stumbling upon unassuming local spots. We found a small, cozy, family-run vegan joint called Penne Vegan Restaurant (located in Chaweng Town).Do not let the name fool you—while they do great plant-based variations, they serve hands-down some of the most authentic, flavorful vegan Thai food on the island. We loaded up on aromatic Massaman Curry, comforting Tom Kha, Larb, and fresh Som Tum (Papaya Salad). But the ultimate comfort food for me was their Veggie and Tofu Fried Rice. It was packed with fresh vegetables, perfectly done tofu, and tasted exactly like a comforting, wholesome home-cooked meal. Best of all? It is incredibly value-for-money. The quantity is huge—just ordering one rice dish is easily enough to satisfy two people.
Final Thoughts: Koh Samui completely won our hearts. It wasn’t just a holiday; it was a reminder that taking regular pauses to nourish your mind with quiet nature, your body with soulful food, and your heart with family time isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity.Have you taken a moment to pause lately? Let this be your reminder to plan your next reset!
