Doha: A City That Feels Like Home | My 7-Day Vegetarian Travel Guide

Some places give you a ‘home away from home’ feeling from the very first moment. For me, Qatar was exactly that. I recently spent a week exploring Doha with my daughter, Kangna, and I came back with a heart full of memories and a stomach full of incredible food.
Whether you are planning a solo trip as a woman, a mother-daughter getaway, or a full family holiday, Qatar is one of the safest, cleanest, and most welcoming countries I have ever visited. If you’ve been worried about finding vegetarian food in the Middle East—don’t be! From farm-to-table organic greens to 12-course fine dining, Doha is a vegetarian’s paradise.
The Vibe: Safe, Smooth, and Soulful
Doha is a stunning mix of ultra-modern architecture and deep-rooted tradition. What surprised me most was the peacefulness. People from every nationality live here in harmony.
One of the best things about the city is the safety. Qatari families love meeting at malls or in beautiful hubs like Mshereib late into the night. You can walk around freely and soak in the positive vibes.
Travel Tip: The traffic is minimal. You can easily reach any corner of the city using Uber or the local Karwa taxis. While Winter (November to March) is the best time to visit, the city’s genius underground air-conditioning ensures you stay cool even in the peak of Summer!
Top Places to Explore
- Heenat Salma Farm
A 45-minute drive from the city, this is a calming oasis. We spent time exploring the organic farms and workshops. Kangna and I loved the farm-to-table experience—the fresh salads, classic hummus, and vibrant beetroot hummus were so fresh and clean! - National Museum of Qatar & Jiwan Restaurant
The museum, shaped like a ‘Desert Rose,’ is an architectural marvel. Inside, we had a 12-course all-vegetarian lunch at Jiwan. The food was a masterpiece, and the view of the city skyline and the water from the restaurant is absolutely breathtaking. - Desert Safari & The Outpost
You can’t visit Qatar without a Desert Safari. We enjoyed camel rides, held a falcon for the first time, and did some crazy dune bashing for over an hour. We ended the adventure with a wonderful Indian vegetarian set menu and delicious desserts at The Outpost. - Mina District (Old Doha Port)
This was our favorite spot—so much so that we went there twice! It’s a vibrant area with pastel-colored buildings. We spent hours feeding the seagulls, enjoying pizza and pasta, and sipping on local Karak chai. It is the perfect place to just sit and relax by the ocean. - Cultural Hubs: Souq Waqif & Katara Village
For a taste of local culture, Souq Waqif is the place for spices and dry fruits. We found a hidden gem called Hosh Mshreireb where we sat by a campfire with hot Karak and honey-cheese roti. At Katara Cultural Village, we explored the Pigeon Towers and treated ourselves to strawberry gelato at Chocolate Italiani—it felt just like being in Europe! - Shopping Paradise:
Villagio & Place Vendome
Doha is one of the richest cities, and the shopping reflects that. Villagio Mall offers a Venice-style boat ride (perfect for families!), while the French-inspired Place Vendome features a grand fountain show every hour. We shopped until we dropped! - The Pearl & Gewan Island
The Pearl (Qanat Quartier) is famous for its scenic bridges and Mediterranean vibes. We had a healthy plant-based lunch at Evergreen Organics. Nearby, Gewan Island’s Crystal Walk looks like a dream at night—perfect for a peaceful evening stroll with a coffee and sandwich.
The Perfect Ending- Boat Ride at Corniche Waterfront
We wrapped up our trip by hiring a private boat for just 120 Riyals to see the city skyscrapers at night from the water. Watching the city lights glitter against the dark sea was a moment of pure magic.
📋 My Qatar Travel Checklist
If you are inspired to plan your own trip, here is a quick checklist to make your journey as smooth as ours:
- Best Time to Visit: November to March for the best outdoor weather. However, if you visit in Summer, look for the “underground air-con” areas in Mshereib and Katara High Street!
- Getting Around: Download the Uber app or use Karwa (local taxi). The metro is also world-class, but taxis are very affordable and convenient.
- Vegetarian Food: You don’t need to hunt! Most places offer amazing Hummus, Mutabel, fresh salads, and local cheese. Indian restaurants are plentiful too.
- Connectivity: Grab a local SIM card (Ooredoo or Vodafone) at the Hamad International Airport upon arrival for easy navigation.
- What to Wear: Doha is modern but respectful. Light, modest clothing is best. Carry a stole or light jacket—even in summer—because the indoor AC can be quite chilly!
- Currency: Qatari Riyal (QAR). Most places accept cards, but keep some cash for Souq Waqif or the small boat rides.
- Safety: One of the safest cities in the world for women travelers. Feel free to explore the night markets and malls with total peace of mind.
